  • January 10, 2009 - Sandalwood Information
Sandalwood has been a highly prized ingredient in incense for centuries. Although the tree species from which it comes can be found in Indonesia, Australia and the South Pacific, Indian Sandalwood is the most sought after, as it has the highest oil content and is therefore the best quality. However, the tree is now in decline due to over-harvesting. The oil can only be harvested by felling the whole tree, and only mature trees (minimum 60 years old) contain the required concentration of oil. To add to the problem, many young saplings are destroyed each year by the seasonal forest fires. Sandalwood trees are also under threat from so-called "spike diseases" - invasive organisms which, over time, reduce the leaves to nothing but spikes, causing the death of the tree.
  • January 10, 2009 - Fair Trade Incense Information
The Mother's Fragrances Incense is produced by the Mother's Commerce Company in Pondicherry, India. The Mother's Commerce Company provides excellent employment for over 700 people, mainly women. MCC began in 1977 to provide good and meaningful employment to local people and to prove that handmade goods from India can be of the highest quality. Whilst mechanisation of agriculture and industry had increased productivity, many people were left without jobs. MCC still uses labour-intensive techniques in production, which ensures jobs for as many people as possible.
